The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) has reached an agreement with Hanoi FC to retain head coach Cristiano Roland for the U17 national team as they prepare for the 2026 U17 World Cup in Qatar this November. This marks the first time in history a Vietnamese youth team has qualified for a world championship, opening a new chapter for Vietnamese football.
After winning the ASEAN U17 championship and reaching the AFC U17 quarterfinals as group winners, Vietnam U17 secured their World Cup berth. Brazilian-born coach Cristiano Roland, who has been with the U17 squad since 2026, is considered the architect of this success. VFF and Hanoi FC negotiated to ensure Roland continues to lead the team for the historic campaign rather than parting ways due to club commitments.
According to the schedule, Vietnam U17 is placed in Group G alongside Belgium, New Zealand, and Mali. They open against Belgium on November 20, then face New Zealand on November 23, and conclude the group stage against Mali on November 26. This is a challenging group as Belgium and Mali have strong youth football traditions. New Zealand is the most manageable opponent and likely the key to advancing.
However, preparations face obstacles. A planned training camp in Thailand with high-quality opposition was cancelled due to visa issues when the venue shifted to Spain. VFF is now working to organize a West Asian camp, preferably in the UAE, with friendlies scheduled against Panama, Australia, and Morocco. This camp would help the team acclimate to a climate similar to Qatar and compensate for the lack of top-tier opposition.
VFF has set a target to 'strive to advance past the group stage'—an ambitious yet realistic goal that protects the federation from backlash if the team exits early. In an interview on FIFA's official website, Coach Roland emphasized mindset and determination: 'One small mistake can decide the match. Players need to maintain fitness for 90 minutes and make quicker decisions under pressure.' He also acknowledged that the biggest barrier is 'self-doubt' among the players, and that changing this mentality is key to overcoming physically stronger opponents.
From a technical perspective, data analysis indicates Vietnam U17 lacks experience at world level. Tactics have not been revealed, but Roland's tone suggests a disciplined, compact defensive approach looking for counter-attacks. The biggest risk comes from the lack of friendlies against European/African teams to benchmark performance. The West Asian camp is still unconfirmed, creating a gap in readiness.
Overall, the first World Cup appearance is a historic milestone, but success is not measured solely in points. Regardless of results, this U17 generation has brought international attention and belief to Vietnamese youth football. The question remains: will the 'mental earthquake' that Coach Roland is building be enough to help the players overcome physical and experience gaps? Time will tell, but one thing is certain: Vietnamese football has stepped onto the world stage.
