When an 18-year-old girl, newly classified in March, has already won singles medals at three different international tournaments in the same season, the experts start to take notice. Lowri Hurd, a young player from the British Para table tennis team, is giving British fans reason to dream. Hurd was not a typical Para athlete from the start. She competed in able-bodied table tennis before being guided into the Para pathway after Myhre Syndrome affected her body. This rare condition led her to be classified in the women's class 9 category, a standing class with a relatively lighter degree of physical impairment. The classification in Spain was described as 'very positive' and provided the foundation for British Para Table Tennis (BPTT) to promote her from the Pathway Squad to the Performance Squad. What stands out is how quickly Hurd has adapted. She describes Para table tennis as 'a completely different game' — slower but requiring much better ball placement. That observation shows her main turning point lies in tactics and rhythm adjustment, not just physicality. Thanks to her technical base from able-bodied table tennis, she has been able to gain experience fast. Evidence includes her victory over Alexa Szvitacs, the reigning world and European champion. A single result cannot define a ranking, but it shows Hurd's performance ceiling sits above many established Para players. Yet the journey has not all been smooth. Hurd lost to Brazil's Danielle Rauen in a deciding set and suffered several fifth-set defeats during the same period. These close losses could reflect an issue with closing out matches, but with such a small sample size, any firm conclusion is risky. BPTT appears to have chosen the 'deep end' approach by placing her in groups with leading Chinese and Brazilian players. Head coach Shaun Marples called it development through competitive fire. Hurd's rise is not limited to singles. Interim performance director Marples has also praised her potential in women's doubles and mixed doubles, a strategic asset that gives Britain more flexibility in team events. She has moved to Sheffield for full-time training at the English Institute of Sport while starting university this month. Balancing education with training is a major challenge, but it also signals her intention to build a sustainable career. If all goes well, Hurd could become a key figure for British Para table tennis in the next Paralympic cycle. Observers should monitor her ability to close tight matches.
