Graves Family

Thomas Graves arrived in Jamestown on the second supply ship in October 1608. He thus avoided the early terrors the colony experienced, with disease and attacks from the indigenous population. He returned to England several times during his life, apparently avoiding future problems in Jamestown by the very timing of these trips. He was a founder of Essex County, Virginia, living there when there were only 35 people, and half of them were related to him.

We are descended from Thomas Graves via John Harley Caldwell and Mary Jane Israel.

Generation No. 1
1. THOMAS1 GRAVES was born 01 Apr 1584 in Lamborne, Berkshire, England, and died Bet. Nov 1635 - 05 Jan
1636 in Probably Northampton Co, Virginia. He married KATHERINE CROSHAW OR CROSHER. She died Aft. 20
May 1636.
Notes for THOMAS GRAVES:
From Thomas Graves, Captain, at http://www.gravesfa.org/gen169.htm
Thomas Graves (1), gentleman, arrived in Virginia in October of 1608, coming from England in the ship "Mary
and Margaret" with Captain Christopher Newport's second supply...Thomas Graves was one of the original
Adventurers (stockholders) of the Virginia Company of London, and one of the very early Planters (settlers) who
founded Jamestown, Virginia, the first permanent English settlement in North America. He was also the first
known person named Graves in North America. Captain Thomas Graves is listed as one of the original
Adventurers as "Thomas Grave" on page 364, Records of the Virginia Company of London, vol. IV. Although
the Records of the Virginia Company state that in 1622 was granted "a patent to Thomas Graves of Doublin in the
Realm of Ireland, gent.", this may be a clerical error. As stated in the original charter of the Virginia County of
London, the first Adventurers to Virginia were to be from the city of London.
Regarding the title of "Captain" which is attached to Thomas Graves in Virginia historical records, he had no
such designation in the Charter of 1609 wherein all the Adventurers (stockholders) of the Virginia Company are
listed, and is shown by Captain John Smith on his arrival in Virginia simply as "Thomas Graves, Gent." Thus it
appears that he acquired the title of Captain after arriving in Virginia.
Thomas Graves apparently made several trips back to Europe. One of those trips may have been during the
"starving time," allowing him to survive that horrible time in the colony. He may have returned to England with
John Smith in 1609. This is supposition, but based on the absence of metnion of him in colony records during
some points in time. For a very active man and a leader in the colony, it is remarkable that he was not mentioned.
1625 -- census of Eastern Shore: 51 people living there, including Thomas Graves.
Captain Thomas Graves died between November 1635 when he was witness to a deed and 5 Jan. 1636 when suit
was entered against a servant to Mrs. Graves (Adventurers of Purse and Person, pp. 188-189). His birth date is
not known, but is believed to be about 1580. That would have made him only about 55 years of age at his death.

she came to Virginia. However, there was a Mr. Croshaw included in the second supply ship. This was the same
ship that carried Thomas Graves from England to Virginia.
The last menition of Mrs. Graves shows her living at Accomack plantation on May 20, 1636

Notes for JANE GRAVES:
From the Francis Graves descriptions:
The following discussion is from the Graves Family Newsletter, 1993, pages 30-31. The Graves ancestry of Jane
Graves who married John Coffey is of considerable interest to the many descendants of this couple. An excellent
book on the Coffey family was published in 1984 by Marvin D. Coffey, James Bluford Coffey, His Ancestors and
Descendants in America, Vol. II - Ancestors. On page 31 of that book, he states: “About 1728 John Coffey
married Jane Graves, the daughter of John Graves, deceased, and his wife Hannah... The origin of our Graves
ancestors is far from clear... Unfortunately, we cannot identify our John Graves as one of [the known men named
John Graves who were descended from Capt. Thomas Graves of VA]...”
“Coffey genealogists who have looked into our Graves ancestry claim that the parents of John Graves (d. 1720)
were James Graves and his wife Jean Mayfield...” He goes on to provide evidence that casts doubt on this
ancestry, however.
Jane is named as a daughter in the will of John Graves, dated 5 Sept. 1719 in Essex County, VA. James Graves
(Jane’s brother) made a will in Essex County, dated 10 Jan. 1724, naming his wife Jean as executrix but naming
no children (making it unlikely that James could have been the father of John or anyone else).
The two previous Graves ancestries for Jane Graves that have been suggested have been through John2 Graves,
son of Capt. Thomas Graves, and through Francis2, Francis3. Both of these have been shown to be very unlikely.
The possibilities are that John, the father of Jane Graves, was a son or grandson of one of the 3 sons of Capt.
Thomas Graves, John, Thomas, or Francis. John2, b.c. 1611, d.c. 1640, didn’t have a son John. Looking at his 3
sons: Ralph, b. by 1629, had no son John named in his 1667 will; William, b. by 1631, had only 1 daughter and
no sons, per a 1668 document; Thomas, b. by 1631, had a son John who was b.c. 1665, d. after 1737, lived in
King and Queen County, VA, and was clearly not the father of Jane.
Looking at Thomas2, he had no son John. His son Thomas, b.c. 1639, had a son John, b. by 1677, d. by 1716,
lived in Gloucester County, VA, clearly a different John; son Jeffrey had no son John; William had a son John
who was not baptized until 1689.
This leaves only Francis2, youngest son of Capt. Thomas Graves. Since the sons of Francis by his marriage to
Jane Maguffey were born too late to be the father of John, John could only have been by a first marriage of
Francis2.
The descent that is believed to be correct is: Capt. Thomas1 Graves; Francis2, b.c. 1630, d.c. 1691; John3, b.
before 1678, d. 1720, Essex County, VA; Jane4, b.c. 1701-05, m. John Coffey. On page 140, 1980 Graves
Family Newsletter, is the statement, “Some authorities think Francis married an unknown first wife, leaving
4
descendants living in Essex County prior to his marriage in 1678 to the widow Jane Maguffey.” Since Francis
was about 48 years of age when he married Jane Maguffey, it is certainly reasonable to think he had been married
before that and had one or more children. In a letter to Kenneth V. Graves on 29 Feb. 1984, Mrs. Sue Davis of
Benton, AR wrote: “John shouldn’t be listed as a child of Jane Maguffey. He was by a first wife.” Sue Davis was
a very thorough researcher, and did much outstanding and reliable research on the Graves family. (R-14)

Notes for LEANDER W. ISRAEL:
Leander is somtimes cited as Lee or Lee Ander. Jenny Payne says he had at least two brothers, named Jim and
John.
In 1860 census, his family lived in Elyton post office district, Bethelehm precinct, Jefferson County, Alabama.
His neighbors are mostly listed as Gouldsby and Shoemaker. A child named Emily L. is listed as 8 years old,
which would be the age of Liza.
I have found other soldiers who died at Gilmer Hospital, Chatanooga, Tennessee, in muster rolls on web sites
where people have researched particular units. People have also referenced Gilmer Hospitals in Marietta,
Georgia, and Texas.
According to Weldon , he died of wounds after the battle of Stones River.
A record of his burial exists on the Watkins List, a list of Civil War dead at the Chattanooga military cemetery
created in 1812. The listing says
Israel, Leander W. Company E, 19th regiment.

son of ALEXANDER CALDWELL and ELIZABETH GOODWIN. He was born 16 Sep 1854 in Alabama36, and died 20
Jul 1918 in Peggs, Cherokee County, Oklahoma37.
Notes for MARY JANE ISRAEL:
She told Aunt Jennie that when she was a small girl, she used to go down to the cemetery where she is buried and
read her Bible during school recess. That story comes from Martha Jane Caldwell Payne, who was her daughter.
Jenny Payne believed that she was born 9/11/1856 in Jefferson County and died March 11, 1931.
Her wedding license was issues September 16, 1874. The performing person is listed as Whifield Anthony.
After her husband died in Oklahoma, she returned to Alabama on the train. She was not feeling very well and the
preacher broughter her back. This was probably senile dementia. She went to live with her daughter Hattie.

Joseph H. Caldwell, 1853-1918, which is at variance from his date of birth in other places.
He was found by some to be peculiar. If there was a singing school, we had to be there. He liked to hunt and
fish, but sometimes would pout for a week without Grandma knowing why. Told by Martha Jane Caldwell
Payne, his daughter, to Weldon.
From handwrtten notes provided by Weldon to Linda Smith Williams (quoting Jenny Payne): Aunt Jennie
remembers being with him the day he died at home, near Locust Grove, Oklahoma. He had "leakage of the
heart." On the morning of July 20, while she and Grandma Caldwell were with him, two neighbor men stopped.
One saw that J.H. couldn't last long and stayed with him. At 11:00 a.m., Joseph Harley looked at the clock and
said " I have about one hour left." Mama says that he died at exactly 12 noon.

Notes for BENJAMIN ALEXANDER CALDWELL:
Jenny Payne says he was buried on his 75th birthday.
He married Julia Ida Wheeler before the Caldwells moved to Oklahoma. Ben and Julie rented a
house near the family, who were living in the "McNair Place," a big two-story house (with pecan
groves) owned by an Indian family named McNair. (Jenny Payne, as related to Weldon ).
In the 1900 census, Benjamin and Juie live alone (without kids), between the Goolsbys and the
Spencers. A short distance away there are Rufus Nicholson, his wife, Rufus Linus Nicholson, and
Walter Hugh Nicholson and his family. This is not the house where they lived when their
grandchildren were growing up. This house was on Pleasant Grove Road, about 3 miles away
toward Edgewater. Eventually, after they moved from the house, Ben's brother Jim and his wife
Carrie moved there. The Paynes moved into the house across the road when they came back from
Texas and Oklahoma.
In the 1910 census, the following families live all in a row:
Andrew and Mary Angeline Wheeler
Richard J. and Jennie Wheeler
Kate Wheeler Glasgow and Bascom Glasgow
Frank C. and Retha Anthony Wheeler
Joseph A. and Bessie Wheeler
He should have been back in Alabama for the 1920 census, but I can't find a record of it. He had a
child born in Alabama in 1915, so he should have been in Alabama rather than Oklahoma in 1920.
The 1930 census has Ben and Julia with son Jim and daughter Alice in Jefferson County, Alabama.
Richard Jones Wheeler is listed just before Ben and Julia. Joseph Andrew Wheeler lives nearby
15
on that same side. Walter Goolsby lives on the other side, then James Goolsby, then John and
Nora Anthony. Ben owns his home, which is worth $6,000. He is a carpenter for a coal and iron
company. He is not a veteran. These census pages do not list the name of the road or the house
numbers.

Notes for JULIA IDA WHEELER:
She said that when they were in Oklahoma, the wind blew so strong that it blew the plants away as
fast as they could plant crops. She said people went crazy from the wind and its damage.
Her grand-daughter says: She did what all the pioneer women did. She sewed, kept house, kept a
garden, and cooked. Her grand-daughter says that she had such an imagination about cooking.
She knew how to take whatever was in the house and make a meal. If it was almost grocery day
and stores were low, she could still figure out a good meal. When everyone was starving and she
needed a quick meal, she would fry fatback, then cook sauerkraut in that same pan. She'd cook a
pan of cornbread while it was cooking, then put that out for lunch with buttermilk and home-made
jelly. (Her grand-daughter Julia Minerva was good at that too.) She sang "Bringing In The
Sheaves" while she mopped the kitchen floor.
Her great-granddaughter says: I remember her Folgers Coffee can. It sat next to her chair. I
guess she dipped snuff and spat into the can. As a child this fascinated me! I remember her as a
kind woman who appeared in my life every once in a while and then disappeared. I am gateful to
my mother for taking the time to write about her so we would all know something about her.

Oklahoma, so her boys wouldn't have to work in the mines. Married (along with Zepha and Lee
Cooley) in Caldwell's front yard on Sunday before finally moving to Oklahoma.
