Glasgow Family

When I asked about the Glasgow family, the answer was usually, "I don't know much about them." This is borne out on the internet. Members of the family say they kept to themselves, which may have been due to physical isolation from the rest of the family. In the days when there were few cars, living several miles away from other family members could isolate one. The extended Glasgow family lived in a set of houses back in the woods near Pleasant Grove, Alabama. Members of the family live there still. There is another Glasgow family in that area of Jefferson County, Alabama, but I have not been able to establish a link yet.

Our Glasgow is Bascomb Benjamin, also called Dock or Doc. He married Kate Wheeler and joined our family thereby. They lived just off Pleasant Grove Road on a piece of land that is now a church, where 2nd Avenue jogs off from Pleasant Grove Road. This was likely land given to Kate by her father.

When I first posted the Glasgow information, I knew very little about him. However, I found some great information collected by a Glasgow who died in 1993, so I now have a much better idea, including a law suit among members of the family, which is documented below.

My current mysteries are these:

1. Was his name Benjamin Bascomb or Bascomb Benjamin? Next time I go to Alabama, I will look up death and marriage records and try to sort that one out.

2. Why is he not listed in the Alabama death index online? I searched at FamilySearch.org and nothing came up for him. It is possible it was transcribed incorrectly.

3. Did he die in 1921 or 1924? There is a disconnect between the cemetery record and his obituary. David Reed and I are trying to sort that one out now.

Will of James Glasgow husband of Mary

IN THE NAME OF GOD, AMEN, The Seventeenth day of October, and the Year of Our
Lord One thousand seven hundred and seventy five, I, James Glasgow, of Gilder's
Creek and Craven County, Planter, being very sick and weak in body, but of
perfect mind and memory, thanks be given unto God for the same, and calling to
mind the mortality of my body, and knowing it is appointed for all men once
to die, do make and ordain this my last will and testament, that is to say,

Principally and first of all I give and recommend my soul unto the hands of God
that gave it, And for my body I recommend it to the earth, to be buried in a
Christain like decent manner at the discretion of my executors, Nothing Doubting
but at the General Resurrection I shall receive the same again by the mighty
power of God, and as touching such worldly estate wherewith it hath pleased God
to bless me in this life, I divise and dispose of the same in manner and form
following , that is to say,

In the first place, I give and bequeath to Mary, my well and dearly beloved wife,
the third of all my goods, chattels, and moveables at her own free will and
disposial. And, further, I allow her the house and fifty acres of land formerly
possessed by James Cannon, during her widowhood, and then to dispose of it to
whatever one of the children she thinks deserves it best.

Also I give to my dearly beloved son, Robert Glasgow, one hundred acres of land
with the house I now live in.

Also I give to my well beloved son, John Glasgow, fifty acres of land and I also
allow all the remainder of my goods, chattels, and moveables to be justly, truly,
and equally divided between all my dear children, to-wit, Robert, John, Archabald,
Wilson, Margaret, and Rachael Glasgow, and I allow that my wife, Mary, and Robert
and John be just in bringing up my small children out of the profit of the lands
according to their proportion.

And I do hereby utterly disallow, revoke, and disannul all and every other former
testaments, wills, and legases, reguisets and executors by me in any wise before
this time named, willed, and bequeathed, ratifying and confirming this and no other
to be my last will and testament.

In Witness I have hereunto set my hand and seal the day and year above written,
and I do appoint and depute my dearly beloved wife, Mary, my chief executor of
this my last will and testament.

Signed, sealed, published, and declared by the said James Glasgow as his last
will and testament in the presents of us, the subscribers, that is to say ---

3. WILSON3 GLASGOW (JAMES2, ROBERT1)5 was born 1772 in Northern Ireland, and died 11 Sep 1817 in Gilders Creek, Craven County, South Carolina. He married MARY MCCRACKEN. She was born 1777, and died 23 Mar 1838.

Notes for WILSON GLASGOW:
In the 1800 census, he is listed with 1022020101. That translates to 1 male under 10, 2 males 16 through 25, 2 males 26 to 44, 2 females under 10, 1 female 16 to 25, 1 female 45 and over. Since he was 28 at the time, this appears to be a mixed family, with Wilson as head of the household. Robert, the person we are interested in, may be the male under 10, since he was born in 1800.

He is listed in the early settlers of Newberry District http://www.freehomepages.com/hmjester/Files/Newberry%20County%20SC%20Genealogy%20-%20Early%20Settlers.htm
It lists his wife as Mary McCracken. It says he arrived before 1820 from Northern Ireland.

Notes for ROBERT GLASGOW:
According to William Oswalt on Ancestry.com: During the 1832 Georgia Land Lottery Robert was awarded a lot in what then was Cherokee County, in the northern part of the state. The history
of Pickens County tells of the old Glasgow home and store in Jasper. Robert later moved his family to Floyd County, GA, locating nine miles norhteast of lthe city of Rome, and near the village of Plainville, in
Gordon County.

There is a census record in 1830 for Robert Glasgow, who is not this Robert Glasgow. Year: 1830; Census Place: Not Stated, Newberry, South Carolina; Roll: 171; Page: 97. That Robert Glasgow is between 60 and 70 and the only other member of the household is a female between 30 and 40.

In the 1850 census, there are two girls named Elizabeth listed. One is 27. The other is 15 and is named Elizabeth S.

In the records for the 1832 Georgia Land Lottery, there is the following records, which supports what is said above:

He is living in the home of John W. King, originally from Georgia. Wilson is listed as 25 years old, from Georgia, among a group of people from Louisiana (King's wife), Mississippi (King's children) and Arkansas (the youngest child). There is no middle initial or other information to confirm this is the right Wilson Glasgow.

I found the following information on ancestry.com: Name: WILSON GLASGOW State: AR County: Lafayette County Township: Walkers Creek Township Year: 1860 Record Type: Federal Population Schedule Page: 033 Database: AR 1860 Federal Census Index

In 1870, in that same part of Arkansas, there is a widow named Emily Glasgow, with an 8 year old named Wilson A. Glasgow, born in about 1862. I checked to see if there was an Emily in the King household and there was not. That Wilson A. Glasgow shows up everywhere. In the 1880 census, he is 18, living with an aunt named Martha Chandler in the same location as the 1870 census. In about 1896, we see him registering land.

He married SARAH ELIZABETH ANTHONY Aft. 1847, daughter of WHITFIELD ANTHONY and LUCINDA MILLER. She was born 03 Sep 1829 in Georgia16, and died 25 Dec 1884 in Jefferson County, Alabama.

Notes for JAMES DAWSON GLASGOW:
Some people say he was born in Georgia, but his father didn't go to Georgia until after the 1832 land lottery.

From the National Park Service:
28th Regiment, Alabama Infantry

28th Infantry Regiment, formed at Shelby Springs, Alabama, in March, 1862, contained men from Perry, Blount, Marshall, Jefferson, Walker, and Dallas counties. It moved to Corith and suffered losses from camp diseases. Later the unit was ordered to Kentucky and fought at Munfordville. It then joined the Army of Tennessee and served under Generals Trapier, J.P. Anderson, and Manugault. The 28th took an active part in the campaigns of the army from Murfreesboro to Atlanta, was with Hood in Tennessee, and saw action in North Carolina. It was organized with 1,100 men, reported 105 casualties at Murfreesboro and 172 at Lookout Mountain. In December, 1863, it totalled 276 men and 189 arms. The regiment lost 4 killed and 24 wounded at Ezra Church, and many were disabled at Nashville. Very few surrendered in April, 1865. Its commanders were Colonels John W. Frazer and John C. Reid, and Lieutenant Colonels William L. Butler and T.W.W. Davis.

E. D. Wilson of Houston, Texas says, "Following the stalemate at Murfreesboro, General Bragg moved his Army of Tennessee [the Army of Mississippi had ceased to exist on 20 Nov 1862 when it merged with the Army of Kentucky. Bragg became the first commander of the new Confederate Army of Tennessee] south to its winter quarters near Tullahoma, Tennessee, and then to Shelbyville. The regiment settled in for winter quarters and remained there until 27 June 1863. " http://www.tarleton.edu/~kjones/28al.html

Notes for SARAH ELIZABETH ANTHONY:
[Anthony in Pleasant Grove Cemetery.FTW]

This child is shown in the 1830 census, but not listed by name.

In 1870, in the home of E. Byron, there are 4 Glasgow children: S. A. BB and F, ages 17, 15, 11, and 9. In a neighboing home (J. D. Anthony) is James Glasgow, age 17. This makes it look like the children went to live with relatives after their father's death. It makes we wonder if the E. Byron listed is Sarah Elizabeth Anthony, who commonly went by the name Eliazbeth and who had been widowed 7 years earlier. This would belie her burial in Village Falls Cemetery as Sarah Elizabeth Glasgow.

15. BASCOMB BENJAMIN6 GLASGOW (JAMES DAWSON5, ROBERT4, WILSON3, JAMES2, ROBERT1) was born Apr 1860 in Georgia28, and died 02 Dec 1924 in Jefferson County, Alabama. He married KATHERINE WHEELER Abt. 1890 in Jefferson County, Alabama29, daughter of ANDREW WHEELER and ELIZABETH JONES. She was born 26 Feb 1874 in Jackson County, Alabama30, and died 01 May 1965 in Jefferson County, Alabama.

Notes for BASCOMB BENJAMIN GLASGOW:
In 1900, he lives near Andrew Lindsey Wheeler with Kate, Lizzie and and James A. Glasgow. Lizzie is listed as 8 , born in Oct 1891 and James A. is listed as 6 born in Dec 1893. He says he was born in Georgia and both of his parents were born in Georgia. He is a farmer, married 10 years. His wife was born in Alabama and both children were also. Kate's parents were born in North Carolina and Alabama, which matches other known information.

In the 1910 census, he is listed between Richard J. Wheeler and Frank C. Wheeler. Andrew Wheeler is on the other side of Richard. Walter Hugh Nicholson is on the other side of Frank C. Wheeler. Ethel, (James) Andrew and Ernest are living in the home. He lists his occupation as farmer.

In the 1920 census, he is living in Apex with Kate, (James) Andrew, Earnest, Hugh and Milton. He lists his occupation as carpenter. James Andrew is a repairman for the coal mines at age 26, still living at home. Lizzie Ethel is not listed in this census.

There are two Glasgows with similar names. One is Bascomb Benjamin Glasgow. The other is Benjamin Bascomb Glasgow.

We believe he was buried in Sylvan Springs and then moved to Pleasant Grove cemetery.

Notes for KATHERINE WHEELER:
In the 1900 census, she says that she has had 2 children and both are living. That would be James Andrew and Lizzie Ethel.

In the 1910 census, she says that she has had 3 children and all 3 are living. That would be James Andrew, Lizzie Ethel, and Earnest.

In the 1920 census, taken on January 10, 1920, the family is living in Apex.

After Bascomb died, Andrew lived with his mother until she died. Milton lived mostly with her. At one time Ernest and Annie Mae and their children lived with Kate. Kate lived near Hugh Thomas Long. If you are facing his house, a little dirt road led off to one side to her house on a wiggly little road. When my mother was in elementary school sometime early in the 1940s, they moved to Swag Ridge, accessed by a "fair weather road," that wasn't useful if it the weather was not good, even during rain you could get stuck for days back in there. Every road there is named Glasgow something. They had quite a bit of land there, back in the woods. When my mother would visit there, they would go through the woods and pass stills, on a bumpy road. Some of my mother's cousins says they remember pieces of barrels back there where the revenuers had broken up stills.

My uncle calls Aunt Kate the "most mysterious one."

Notes for MILTON BASCOMB GLASGOW:
There is a World War II Army Enlistment Record for Milton B. Glasgow. He lists his birth year as 1914. He says he was born in Jefferson County, Alabama. He was drafted and joined the Army on 24 March 1945 at Fort McClellan. He was a private. It states his enlistment as follows: Enlistment for the duration of the War or other emergency, plus six months, subject to the discretion of the President or otherwise according to law It says he has grammar school education and is a geographer. He is listed as single, wihtout dependents. His height is listed as 90 and his weight as 109. Those must be metric measures.

My mother thinks he was a geographer with the mines. The mines would teach people to do what they wanted. He was not very ambitious. Mother says he had a round face, dark hair, fair skin, a little bit stocky but not fat, not very tall.

Some family members say that no one would have him because he ws azy and never did anything useful. He married late in life and had one child after he was in the millitary. They lived near where Weldon Payne, about a hundred yards from the Payne place. Her name was Ida Lee Pike.

Notes for MARY ADDIE MCDONALD:
In 1900 she is living with her husband and children. She states that she has borne 6 children and 4 are still living. Four children are shown on the census. She says that she has been married 19 years.

In 1930, she is living with her son and his wife. The census states that she is widowed.

At Hueytown.org, McDonald Chapel records, it says her gravemarker says she was born in 1880. This seems unlikely when compared to census records and the age of her husband.

He married ANNIE MAE BLACKBURN, daughter of JAMES BLACKBURN and LULA GREEN. She was born 23 Jul 1910 in Alabama, and died 04 Feb 1996 in Jefferson County, Alabama.

Notes for EARNEST GLASGOW:
Differing dates on grave marker and social security.

Lindsey was the same age as my mother. They started to school together. Mother thinks they had another child around 1944 and so does her brother. They are trying to remember that child's name. Lindsey and Marvin are both still living. Marvin attended the last famly reunion in 2004. In Forest Grove Memorial Gardens, he is listed as Earnest Glasgow, Sr., so that other child may have been Earnest as well.

They bought about 40 acres of land in about 1938-1939. All of the brothers live on that land now. Marvin's daughter lives there. Lindsey's son lives on a piece of his property. Sonny's wife's mother and dad lived down there too. They have their own water supply for about 7 families. Bascomb (Dock) lived behind the church next to Hugh Thomas' house. They called Kate Maw.

Notes for ANNIE MAE BLACKBURN:
There is another Annie Mae Glasgow, who was born and died in North Carolina. She was born in August 1910, very close to this Annie Mae. She died in 1989. She is definitely not this Annie Mae.

Social Security Record: Name: Annie M. Glasgow SSN: 417-68-7028 Last Residence: 35224 Birmingham, Jefferson, Alabama, United States of America Born: 23 Jul 1910 Died: 4 Feb 1996 State (Year) SSN issued: Alabama (1965 )

My uncle always thought her maiden name was Annie Mae Chapman, because she had brothers named Chapman. From the Hueytown.org cemetery listings, I picked up Annie Mae Blackburn as her maiden name. However, I found her in a census listed as the oldest of several children and called Annie Mae Chapman. As the oldest, she was apparently born when her mother was 16. In that census her mother says she was 20 when she married Mr. Chapman. Lula B. Green married James Blackburn when she was very young and then married George Wiley Chapman when she was 20. She married Bert Messer sometime after 1940.

I wrote to Don Hogan at toygoose@bellsouth..net to determine where the names of her parents on the cemetery listing for Forest Grove Cemetery came from. He says they came from Angwin Funeral Home, which should be a good source. They are confirmed by her son, Marvin Glasgow.
