The Adair Family

Margaret Jane Adair (called Jane) married William Richardson Nicholson. She died in Dekalb County, Alabama in 1867, a fact that is documented by her gravestone. Beyond that, this genealogy is a good example of one that is very difficult to verify. Various people posted it on the internet, going back more than 30 generations. This may be totally accurate or it may be complete fiction. There is pretty strong evidence that her parents were John Adair and Jennie Kilgore. He was certainly of Irish descent. He may have been born in South Carolina and he may have been born in Ireland. Jennie was almost certainly born in South Carolina. Beyond that, we have dates that don't add up, including a date of marriage that would have occurred after Jennie was 40, for a marriage that produced 11 children. This is the challenge of genealogy -- to sort out the chaff from the single shining star.

In the 1930 census, Walter Hugh and Jannie have just married. He is a carpenter for a building
contractor. She is a check girl in a laundry. He is employed at the time of the census and he is not
a veteran. He owns his home, which is worth $4,000. He lives next door to Andrew Lindsey
Wheeler. This was unusual because he lived with his parents most of his life.
His neice and nephew remember him as wandering, living at home and then coming and going,

Volume: 1393 Certificate: 2497 Death Date: 1950 (He was at the Veterans Hospital in Lake City
when he died.)
Their son, Jack Smith, was born in a house on the property of Andrew Lindsay Wheeler. It was a 2-
story house back behind the main house.
During the 1930 census, the family was living in Mount Clemons Michigan, near Detroit. He was
working there reupholstering and repairing Victorian furntiure and returned to Alabama just before
the birth of his daughter, Linda. On April 24, 1930, he lived in Clinton Township, Mount Clemons,
at 25 Church Street, with Ruby, Guy and Jack. There were two boarders in the house, whose
names appear to be Verna Leonardson(born in Michigan) and Charles Simmons (born in Illinois).
The family is paying $30 a month for rent. Emmett says his father was born in Georgia and Ruby
says her mother was born in Missouri according to the census takers, both things that we believe
are not true. The lodgers are a waitress at a hotel and a laborer doing odd jobs. Emmett lists
himself as a a carpenter in a cabinet shop.
His daughter says: He always planted a few crops because farming was in his blood. They had 39
acres in Alabama, but a lot of it was woods (long-term leases from Tennessee Coal and Iron
company). He would have corn, sweet potatoes and soy beans, in a time when people were not
growing soy beans. He fed them to the animals, but said that people would be eating them before
long. He had a kitchen garden too. He worked in a defense plant in Alabama, during World War II.
His daughter does not know what he did because they didn't talk about what they did at the plant.
She thinks he made powder for explosives. His son thinks he was working on setting the plant up
rather than working in the plant. He learned how to cut hair in the Army, so on Sunday afternoons
their front porch was a barber shop. Everyone who was working 6 days a week in the defense
plants during the war would get their hair cut because that was their only day off. When it became
popular for women to bob their hair, he cut his wife's hair. The relationship with her father was
cooler after that, and he may have never forgiven Emmett for cutting Ruby's hair.
His son says: My dad worked in the Edgewater coal mine as a brick mason building block and
brick walls for air and ventilation control and motor shops in the mine for part of the war years. He
worked as a saw filer, sharpening saws while building a powder plant for DUPONT co. in Sylacaga,
Al. Tthey produced powder for dynamite and all kinds of explosives ( I think the full name was
I. E. Dupont and De mours co. I may not have it spelled right ). Both before and after the war he
worked as a contractor building houses.
He says his dad was a man of sometimes strong opinions and did not care what other people
thought, a trait which arguably carried down in the famly. At church one time the discussion came
up among a small group about why some person did not come to church. Someone in the group
mentioned that this person just did not have a suit to wear and felt out of place .My dad very quickly
answered "who is going to church, the person or the clothes ? If the clothes are going you can just
put them in a paper sack and send them." After more discussion about being too poor to own a
suit my dad suggested that the group start wearing KHAKI pants and any kind of clean shirt and
forget the tie. The next Sunday he showed up in khaki pants. He was the only one but he
continued to do that. He did not believe that clothes make the man. I am afraid that I have to
agree. He worked at the powder plant as a carpenter-- saw filer while building the plant. he never
worked in the plant after it went into production
His son also says his dad had 2 separate 40 acre, adjoining leases with 40 acres in cultivation, the
rest was in woods and pasture. He believed in a good garden He liked to go to church and tell
people "I have plenty of garden vegetables, Come on over and help yourself " then when we got
home he would tell me to go pick some and bring it to the house so they won't be tromping around
in the garden (some of them didn't know how to pick and would destroy more than they picked).
From the 6th grade on I got out of school at 1:00 and came hom, ,hooked up the mule(s) and
plowed until he came home to take over the plowing and I would go in and fix the mules feed
sometimes milk the cow and then do my homework (what part of it I ever done) I think the main
reason for some of the farming was to keep me out of trouble - - - It worked. I came in one day
and told him I wanted to go to a specific ball game.He wasn't in the best mood that day He said "
I've got your d- - - ball game there is a team of mules and 40 acres and if that runs out I will lease
some more" well that fall we bought a used tractor and I learned to drive it pretty good, The 40
acres ran out, I had plowed it over and over..My dad always tried to do what he said he would do
so he leased 5 acres - - -5 miles from home I plowed that and planted it in soybeans, I cut and
raked it and he gave it away because it had NUT grass in it and he,didn't want to contaminate our
place with it. But I never got into trouble I didn't have time. Of all the farming we done , I sold 1
half wagon load of watermelons..Of the rest, we had what we used and gave away more than we
used I can't remember ever selling anything more. ---He first leased the front 40 acres that he had
helped uncle Hugh Nicholson clear the trees off of it I can remember some of the trees were oaks
over 2 feet in diameter. the first lease was before my sister Linda was born The second lease was
20
an adjoining 40 acres that uncle Dick Wheeler *(Granny Caldwell's brother ) had leased for years
and he gave up the lease. since we had the front 40 the company ( T. C I ) let us have it.There was
some mine cracks--big cracks in the ground varying in size some4--6 ft. wide and 40--50 ft long
open 4 to 8 ft deep ( WE had a mule fall into one once and we had to dig her out ) We filled them
and watched them and farmed right over them. Occasionally one would open up and we would
have to fill it again some of the cracks are there now in among the houses that have been built in
my field.

She was buried on her wedding anniversary, having outlived her husband by 36 years.
Her daughter says: She quit school in 7th grade and stayed home to help her mother. Later in life
she was a cook, caretaker and so forth. During World War II she took a home nursing course.
When any of the people in the neighborhood had a baby, she would help the doctor. When anyone
was sick, they would come get her to sit with the sick person and take care of them When her
grand-daughter Linda Rae was 3, she had dysentery while she was away visiting with Ruby. Ruby
sat in the hospital with her, crocheted and fed her 7-up and jello. She grew flowers, both plain and
unusual. People would come by and see her flowers and she would pick a bouquet for them. She
made many, many, rag dolls, long and skinny, all sewn by hand. They could go in the washing
machine and dryer and come out and be loved some more. She made completely hand-sewn
quilts, then made potholders from the scraps. Everyone in the family used her potholders.
Everyone thinks of her when they see a pansy. She always said the kids could pick all the pansies
they wanted. Pansies were fair game.
Her grand-daughter says: Granny Rube taught me to crochet, sew by hand and pick flowers
properly. In my garden now I have all sorts of flowers that remind me of her: pansies, peonies,
columbines, and coral bells. My most vivid memory of her is watching her kill a diamond back
rattler with a hoe when she was about 58 years old. My most vivid memory of her house in Lynn
Haven, Florida, was some asparagus my mother picked and cooked for me there one spring. It
was the best asparagus I ever ate. I loved her quilts and I always sewed, but I thought I could
NEVER make a quilt like she could. One day, when I was in my late thirties, I saw a quilt made of
old blue jeans and tied with red yarn. It was so ugly. I knew I could do better than that, so I started
making quilts and enjoying every minute of it. I am proud to say that I have a copy of her rag doll
pattern.
Her son says that she did not sell flowers until later in life. She always said, "Flowers shoudl be
given away" and gave away a fortune in them. She also made those rag dolls complete in every
detail with panties, petticoats, socks. His wife has one with small glasses made of small copper
wire and once tried to get her to make one using some of his sister's red hair. Granny Rube made
one of cotton yarn that looked like her daughter's hair instead. if you have one of hers notice the
small stitches, handmade like they were machine made. EVERY baby as far back as I can
remember, got a stuffed crochet multi color ball (and I think Nell still has one of our kids ball) Nell
still treats some of those rag dolls like they were gold.

Margaret Jane Adair (called Jane) married William Richardson Nicholson. She died in Dekalb County, Alabama in 1867, a fact that is documented by her gravestone. However, this genealogy is a good example of one that is very difficult to verify. This is the challenge of genealogy -- to sort out the chaff from the single shining star.

contractor. She is a check girl in a laundry. He is employed at the time of the census and he is not
a veteran. He owns his home, which is worth $4,000. He lives next door to Andrew Lindsey

when he died.)
